It is evident that both sides of the argument perceive self promotion as a detriment to the education system, the question is, however, is retention the approach that should be taken in order to address the issue.

Social promotion taxes both teachers and students, it sends messages to students that they can move on to the next level even if they lack the knowledge or effort, and it maintains the self-esteem of low achieving students. This remark was made by the side of Pro-retention, and while i agree with the claims, i do not believe that retention is the most appropriate approach.

Retention does not solve the problems of low achieving students and retained students struggle with self esteem.

I believe that a school that would choose retention is a school that cares about the student body as a whole, they do not care about the individual students that make up the school, and bettering their success in learning.

Retention might work in some cases ( at home) but it can not be the approach that is used to address issues of students as a whole.

Other approaches:
Promote struggling student with an IEP

Other approaches must be thought upon to end the issue of passing struggling students on to the next grade, but retention is not the answer.
